The social distance at a Toronto Wedding

A Toronto wedding is a hard place to perform good social distance practices. Toronto is a large city and if we don’t social distance our selves properly at a wedding, it could become problematic. While we shouldn’t let this pandemic control our lives we do need to be cautious about it and follow the rules of social distancing. While having a virtual wedding or a micro wedding might be the solution for some couples some of us still have a larger number of guests to invite to an in-person ceremony. Whether it is for cultural reasons or any other reason, having a wedding in Toronto is still possible.

Saftey at a Toronto wedding

The first and most obvious way is to require face masks for all guests at all times. You could make your own with your names written on them or you could just buy a few boxes of the disposable ones it’s up to you but make sure everyone is wearing one

Be firm about the masks. There might be some guests who give you pushback on wearing them. Make sure they know they will be asked to leave if they don’t follow the rule. You wouldn’t want to make your other guests uncomfortable with someone who doesn’t care for their wellbeing.

Sanitizer

There are a ton of cute bottles you can buy to put hand sanitizer in for guests to use throughout the wedding. And small hand sanitizers make a great wedding favour. Putting them at the entrance and throughout the venue. To save money you could even put them on each table as a centrepiece.

Chop that guests list in half!

While it might be awkward to uninvite guests to a wedding especially when you have to cut a bunch of people who have already RSVP’d.  Be honest and let them know that they didn’t make the cut. It’s a hard conversation but depending on the person just give them a call.

If you are going to live stream the event you can invite them to that instead. This makes a great way to still include people at your wedding. By streaming the event you can cut your guests list down to the barebones wedding party and still interact with all the guests live that way people don’t feel they didn’t make the cut.

Social distance the wedding tables

Table spacing is so important that renting a few rooms instead of one large banquet hall to fit everyone with enough space works well. Separating the rooms from the bar and the dance floor and the dining room.

Table service makes the most sense is the only option right now for food vendors. Although the buffet style is always a favourite right now it’s a no go. The best they can offer is food on the tables to share with each 10 person table. It’s not a bad idea if you have guests who are pickier eaters.

Since bars are a high traffic area at weddings think about table service or having smaller drink stations around the venue rather than just one bar. A couple of drink cards that can be swapped out and then wiped down while they are being refilled can go a long way.

Seating Chart – a good social distancing tool

One of the best ways is to make seating charts for both the ceremony and reception. This is so that you can spread everyone out but also let those who are in the same household sit together.  Consider the circle formation rather than the traditional rows for the ceremony. You can get creative with the circle formation and create the aisle to go around everyone before arriving at the center.  Lets everyone get a good look at you and the dress!

Change the wedding to a more socially distant format

Alongside virtual weddings, there are many other options such as:

Shift weddings: This is for large groups and you place all your guests into different shifts through the wedding. Making sure that you take the time in between each shift to sanitize. This requires a lot of planning and communication with the vendor

Mini-mony: These are just a small ceremony, no reception just getting everything officiated both legally and religiously and only has a few guests. Usually, this is so that later you can have a larger celebration.

Mirco weddings: These are full wedding celebrations but with under 50 people. With this type of wedding, your price per person goes up but your number of people is down. Typically you spend the money on things such as top-shelf alcohol.

Multiple celebrations:  This is where you have multiple parties with different guests on different days and spread out the wedding so that everyone gets invited and that everyone has a chance to celebrate with you.

There are a ton of ways to work social distancing into your pandemic wedding. Don’t get upset if a guest opts to not come to the wedding, they want to protect themselves and their loved ones as well.  We are all in this together and while you may opt to continue with your wedding plans some may postpone.
